In the convection zone, energy is transported by convection currents. Convection is where energy is heated up at the bottom, so it rises. Then once the energy reaches the top, it will cool down since it is farther from the core. Since the energy is now cooled, it will sink to the bottom, and then get heated up again. Photons use these convection currents to reach the surface of the sun. The photon will ride the current up, and then leave once it reaches the top.
